Many times students struggle to develop writing skills and become frustrated when the writing process feels more challenging and takes a lot longer than anticipated. As a result, some students may avoid writing or spend an inordinate amount of time trying to write and not making the progress they need to in order to hand work in. Other students are able to complete their writing and submit it on time but do not feel good about the product. They may also struggle with a lack of self-confidence stemming from some of the feedback they receive from teachers.
CJL tutoring helps all of these students by breaking down the writing process, helping students develop a sequence of strategies that works best for them, and giving them the structured practice and feedback they need to develop their writing and critical thinking.
Casey begins by conducting a thorough assessment of students’ current strengths, weaknesses, habits, and beliefs about writing. When a more comprehensive team approach is helpful, Casey also consults with current teachers and advisors to gain a better understanding of a student’s needs and learning goals. After compiling and synthesizing this data, Casey creates an individualized curriculum made up of a sequence of writing consultations and outside writing assignments where necessary to help students meet their personal and educational goals.
Becoming self-reliant as a writer not only can lead to improved grades and college choices but also helps students add greater nuance and complexity to their thinking and reasoning. In our hyper-connected world, communication and written expression/verbalization skills are not only a necessity in the marketplace but also an essential tool for gaining self knowledge and making complex decisions.
